Question:

1120 SAT score (math and reading combined) good enough to get into William and Mary?

My cousin, Jade, is worried that she can't get into W&M with a 1120 (580 in reading, 540 in math), combined 1700 SAT score. She actually lives in Williamsburg, VA---would that make a difference in acceptance? Jade has good extracurriculars and could get good recommendations from numerous teachers. Pretty high GPA, 3.5-3.75 or so, I can't remember what she told me. Definitely top 15% of her class, maybe top 10%, not sure.

...So, thoughts on chances??

Thanks, from me and Jade.

  1. I suggest you retake and aim for at least 1500, which is the national average.

  2. her score on the SAT is lower than the average accepted student at William and Mary. Here is a link so that you can view the type of scores William and Mary expects:http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/se...

In addition the school considers test scores as a very important factor in admission:http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/se...

If her GPA is a 3.75 and she has taken a rigorous course load then she is on par with William and Mary in that area. http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/se... (scroll down to the bottom for average GPA)

The SAT does not help her case for acceptance. The GPA, if it is at the high end of what you listed will help. Having a family member attend the school is also a plus and good involvement and recommendations will certainly help. To have the best possible chance for admission I suggest she retake the SAT and try to score higher.

    best of luck

  3. It will be hard to get in with that score.
