My childrens best friend was in a car accident and is now wheelchair bound for 6 months while her crushed pelvic region heals. Her family is financially strapped and needs help with getting a handicapped accessable vehicle while their child heals. They live in Illinois are there any agencies that they can contact to help get assistance? Thank you and God Bless.

  1. Is it really worth the expense of a car for only 6 months? Can they deal with what they have and just help their child in and out of the car? Even if they plan to sell the car, they probably won't get what they spent on the car, since cars depreciate the minute you have the pink slip.

My husband was in a bad accident a couple of years ago and he was also wheel chair bound. The doctors said he would be in a wheel chair for 6 to 9 months and he was out of it in 3 months. During those 3 months, I helped him out of the chair and into the car when we went anywhere.

  2. Have your friends look into renting a wheelchair accessible van for the duration of their child's rehabilitation.  Often insurance will cover the cost of renting for a temporary disability.  This will be far less expensive than purchasing a wheelchair accessible vehicle that they will then have to turn around and sell in six months.
