I spent 12 1/2 years as an Air Force Commissioned Reserve Officer, was passed over twice for promotion to major so I enlisted for 8 years to the rank of MSgt, do I get to retire as an Officer or Enlisted?

  1. i'm fairly certain that you would retire at the highest rank that you achieved.  so your retiring rank would be that as an officer.

  2. I would guess it would be at the last rank that you had.

  3. Usually it is the highest grade held.

  4. According to the UCMJ, you will retire at the highest pay grade honorably held. So, in your case, you should retire as a Captain.

  5. You will retire at the highest paygrade achieved.

We have a SGM that was a MAJ in the Army NG.  He's getting paid as a MAJ when he retires.

Funny how this question popped up cuz we were all just discussing this with the SGM over a round of golf...

  6. You normally retire at the highest rank held, as long as you time in grade requirements for that rank. In your case you will most likely want to take the E-8 retirement. It should be more money a month then an O-3.

Check with you personal officer for specifics on your case.
