Question:

1200 watt Amp drained 2 batteries and my alternator?

I have a 1200 watt sony xplod 2/1 amp powering 2 sony xplod 12 inch subs. I have a 1994 acura integra, brand new battery, brand new amp. The amp is turned up half way, so I'm running 600 peak watts when its in its prime. It killed my battery, and the amp never recharged it. I got a new battery, and the same thing happened again, then they checked my alternator (brand new) and the amp ruined that too, thats why it wont charge any of my batteries. So now I'm getting a new alternator and a new battery. Would a capacitor save my battery and my amp? Everybody says thats what I need. But i've read that cheap ones actually kill your battery, if they aren't fully charged when you shut off the car, it continues to take power from your battery until it is. But lets say I get a good one, will it fix the problem? What exactly is a capacitor? please help, thanks in advance

  1. I've had the same amp for three years with no problems.

The maximum current draw of that amp is 48 amperes. With the car running you shouldn't have any problems.

  2. Possibly your wiring may not be wired properly?  Could have a short in the system?  Could be that the subs are not wired properly?

Dont know without really checking out your system.

I would suggest having it checked out by a professional.

Especially if you are not sure what is going on, and if items of your car are failing.  Batteries alternators etc....Not good.

  3. Firstly a Capacitor is just a battery capable of rapidly draining and recharging. yes it will charge off your battery but that should just be the alternator charging it.

Also the alternator should recharge the battery and power the amp. So check the alternator. if its fine make sure youve got the remote cable for the amp hooked up or else the amp will never stop taking power.
