Hi All,

I want to connect the charging loom from my outboard to a battery in my boat. The motor has rectifier etc built in. What I want to know is what I need between the output of the charging loom and the battery? Do I need a fuse? Some sort of charge controller?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

  1. If you have a Mercury, Nissan or Tohatsu motor, the answer is no. Just hook up a small battery like a 12v. lawn mower battery to the charging loom and run your fish finder, lights and etc off of the battery.

I don't know about other makes.

  2. If it's not electric start Or have a plug in the front of the cover pan than no you cant as it dosen't have a charging system> Contact the the dealer with your model # And ask them for sure>>Some have a small running light plug in but won't charge a battery>>

  3. I assume you mean a battery other than the starting battery.

The easiest is with a Perko battery selector switch. This lets you choose where the charge goes. Another is called a combiner and is a little more complicated. It allows the motor to charge the battery that needs it automatically.
