4 great options:

1. Mexico City and surroundings: Having Mexico City as your base, spend a few days in fabulous Mexico City and then go to great colonial town nearby: Taxco, Cuernavaca, Puebla, Cholula. Mexico City is so big and have some many things to do, that you might as well may need a whole month, so don't worry about things to do in there (worry about what not to do!).

2. Mérida and Riviera Maya: You can start in beautiful Mérida, with what I personally consider the best Mexican cuisine and going to Celestún and the nearby haciendas to savor a bit of old Mexican aristocracy. Then go to Cancún and devour the Riviera Maya: Chichen-Itzá, Tulum, Xel-Há, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Cobá, Xcaret... etc. Twelve days also too fit, there may be things you won't finish to see.

3. Oaxaca-Chiapas: Two of the most magical places in Mexico. Amazing to discover how Mexican indígenas still interact with Occidental upbringing. Great towns, beaches, ancient ruins and natural landscapes!!

4. Guadalajara and surroundings: A bit more upbeat, starting with always amusing Puerto Vallarta, then going to the very Mexican Guadalajara. Then go to Guanajuato and Morelia, two very beautiful and busy colonial towns.

5. Copper Canyon-Mazatlan: This is something that no even lots of Mexicans do. Start in Chihuahua and take the train from there to Mazatlán and stop in every little town the train stops. One of the key attractives is the Copper Canyon, which is like 4 times bigger the Grand Canyon, and it is still inhabited by Tarahumaras. Finish in Mazatlán, one of the busiest beaches of the country. One of my favorit trips ever!

Additional options: Baja / Cabos, and Monterrey / North East.
