Question:

12v solenoids that turn on AND off by themselves?

I'd like to utilize 12 volt linear push solenoids in a little project. My understanding of solenoids though, is that the solenoid will stay in the "pushed position" as long as the voltage remains applied.

It'd make my effort much easier if I could find some solenoids that would push and then retract even though the 12v power has not been turned off.

Any chance of finding something like that? Websites for that type of solenoid?

  1. wire it to a timer that will go on-off, or whatever setting you'd like.

  2. Try a linear actuator, these only need power when in motion. The downside is that they are slower and more costly than a simple solenoid. However they can operate much larger loads.

  3. There are ways of doing so, for example you could connect the solenoid in series with a modest sized electrolytic capacitor. When you closed the switch, current would flow through the solenoid, and charge the capacitor. As the cap. accumulated voltage, the current would quickly slow and stop, releasing the solenoid.

On the other hand, unless you have a working knowledge of electronics, as well as a grasp of the math involved, you might have a hard time setting this up correctly.
