If you were travelling on a coach for 13 hours and the drivers only had one 10 minute stop, would you complain to the coach company? It was up to the company, not the drivers how many times they stopped.

As a motoring journalist I most definately support the practice of regular 2 hourly / 200kms rest stops for at least 15 minutes when you undertake long trips. This is even more important for drivers of heavy vehicles, as these large and cumbersome vehicles are more taxing to drive than are passenger cars. Fatigue is one of the worst killers on our roads and drivers should heed the warnings of authorities and experts alike to break their trips up into 2 hours stints.

And yes, transport companies MUST be aware of this more so than Johnny Public is, for they have to adhere to strict rules, regulations and protocols re. the transportation of goods and passengers.

"Driver Fatigue is a major problem all over the world. Thousands of people are killed, or seriously injured due to drivers falling asleep at the wheel.

In the UK alone, almost 45,000 people are killed, or seriously injured in road accidents every year, and road safety experts consider driver fatigue is a major cause.

It is estimated that driver fatigue accounts for up to 20% of serious/fatal accidents on motorways and monotonous roads in the UK, although this estimate is believed to be well below the actual figure of deaths/serious injuries, as it is often difficult to detect whether fatigue was a factor in a crash, and at what level of tiredness the driver was suffering. Statistics show that 1 in 3 road traffic accidents are involving people driving at work. By completing a driver improvement program, frequency of accidents and costs can be dramatically reduced. Experts at Loughborough also concluded that a 150mg intake of caffeine, and a short nap of only 15 minutes significantly reduced sleep related incidents for up to two hours.

What can drivers do to avoid falling asleep at the wheel?

    > ensure good sleep the night before

    > avoid starting long journeys if not feeling fit and well

    > plan your journey to include 15 minute rest breaks (at least) every 2 hours

    > etc. etc. "

There are numerous guidelines for drivers regarding this issue.

You have a right to complain, as a customer, to the management, as well as to authorities, if they do not adhere to these rules!

  4. I would complain... in most places, it's illegal to make someone work for 8 hours without a minimum half-hour break, so not only is it uncomfortable for the passengers, but it's wrong to make the driver go that long without a proper break. I hope the coach had a bathroom at least. You can complain about human rights if it didn't. It's unhealthy to go for 13 hours without at least 2 bathroom breaks.
