Hi all. And thanks for reading...

Yeah, he's my bestest friend & had his first seizure last weekend. I'm wondering how much time I have with the little guy. It's like a daggar thru my heart each time this happens, although not frequent...lately. I'm new to all of this and welcome any comments. Thanks much. ;-(

  1. You need to put the poor thing to sleep

  2. Everyone else here has said what you need to do.  You do need to take the dog to the vet.

Please don't worry about "what ifs" at this time... you need to get these seizures under control, first.

Antiepileptic meds are VERY inexpensive... pennies a day.  Don't worry about cost.  Just get him to the vet so that your vet can determine a cause at this time.

Epilepsy is something that many pets and humans lives with, you just deal with it and accept it... it's NOT a reason to 'put the dogs to sleep' as one suggested.

Your dogs age may be a factor of another underlying condition that can be bringing on these siezures, but you won't know what it is or how to control it unless you take him to the vet.  It'll be ok.  Do what is right for your friend.

    Good luck

  3. he needs a vet no one can do anything much through the computer...hope shes gonna be ok

  4. Take him to the vet.  Seizures can be controlled with meds.  I know how painful it is to watch your dog having seizures - one of my greyhounds has them.  But your sheltie can be helped by his vet - take him in - he deserves the best care!

  5.      I'm so sorry that your dog is having seizures.  Unfortunately, they're common in dogs, especially as they get older.  I've had a dog that had seizures.  The good thing, is there are meds that control them.  Alot depends on how often and how severe the seizures are occurring with your dog.  If they are small or the "petit mal", which are easily controlled, and usually are triggered by stress.  The more severe or "grand mal" seizures can be scary, and are often triggered by stress or another illness going on with your dog, but can also be controlled.

Make sure you get your dog checked out thoroughly by a vet asap.  Have them check his liver, do blood work, etc..  Our pets are like a best friend or member of the family.  We need to give them the best life possible.

When your dog has a seizure, hold him, talk to him so he knows you are there and if you can put the seizure med(usually phenobarbitol) in his mouth or under the tongue so that he swallows it.

Best of luck to your dog.  I bet he's a great dog!

  6. you need to take her to the vet.

  7. hi, I was a vet tech in NJ for a few years and I can tell you that you really should be taking him to a vet.  There are medications he can take to control the seizures.  Having seizures doesn't mean he is about to die.  Give the vet all the information you can, like just how many seizures he's had and how long it lasted, and how he acted afterwards may help too.  I would get him in as soon as you can.  Good luck.
