13th Opening Day start invigorates goals for St. Louis Cardinals’ Lance Berkman
Lance Berkman will be starting his new Major League Baseball campaign with the St. Louis Cardinals, a different step for him indeed, considering his most starts have come for the Houston Astros. He is going to be rallying the outfield personnel from the
right field; however, there is a motion to assign him the starting role of a hitter.
Unfortunately, Berkman’s 13th Opening Day start is going to be something he will need to wait for. Berkman, nevertheless, wants to let loose right away. Playing in the outfield after 2004 and leading the offense is something he wants to do sooner.
"It's been a great transition," Berkman said in reference to his first stint in spring training with the Cardinals.
"Obviously it's been a little strange going out there in another uniform, but I'm excited about it."
Berkman told the reporters that Opening Day is always an exciting time and the Cardinals are a good team. He stated that everyone wants to get off to a good start and in his case - he is just ready to get going.
Even though Berkman understands the significance behind going first in the batting line up, he would have appreciated the situation if it was kept low key. The reason obviously is his eagerness to play baseball as soon as possible. The excitement has the
player all pumped up, with him eager to break the bounds at the first opportunity.
"Not to sound cynical or anything like that, but we're here to play the game. There's a lot of nerves on Opening Day, and you just want to get going. All the stuff, the parades and the pageantry and that sort of thing is great, and it's a great experience
for the fans, but as players, we're like, 'Let's go.' It's tough, because you're waiting and the anticipation kind of draws out and it makes it a little tougher mentally."
Berkman is on a yearlong contract and is looking to make the most impact with the Cards, in order to prove his worthiness to other teams in the league.
