Hi, I'm a single mom who is admittedly a lame cook. I want to help my son, and I need some tips on how to, economically, help him bulk up for football season. He is 5"8 and 122 lbs. Dr. says he is thin. He plays defensive line.Thank You!

  1. McDonalds......Everyday for every meal

  2. Holy cow!  The D-line?  He should be a linebacker or something.  He's too small to play the line.

Sorry... I have a 15 yr old son who was about your son's H/W last year and he started weightraining and lifting.  He is now 5'10" and weighs about 150.  And strong as an ox!  He's still sinewy but he plays RB on offense and LB on defense.  Our line is definintely the bulkier kids.

As far as bulking him up food-wise, I'm real careful about that as I don't want my son to get too many calories from foods that aren't good for him in the long run.  One coach told us years ago to feed him a couple of lbs of bacon each week!!! WHAT?  He has a great physique and his father and I are overweight so I can't even imagine doing that to him.

Go to this website:  www.kutztowncougarfootball.com.  There's a link for a weight-gaining caloric program.

    Good luck!

  3. Hit the weight room.  If he can't do that, have him do pushups and free squats with no weight.  You can buy a big size protein mix on www.bodybuilding.com for about $30 that will last him awhile.  Protein builds muscle.  He can eat those cans of tuna or eggs or anything like that.  Lame cook or not, you seem to have his best interest in mind and that's what matters.  5'8 122 at 14?  He needs to change positions.

  4. Have him lift some weights and go to a weight room. Good luck for your son!

  5. Making him fat on food is bad idea the best thing is for him to gain weight by muscles.

  6. i actually play linebacker and sometimes corner-back. definitely not Defensive line. this is the son btw

  7. I agree that, at his current height, Defensive Line is a bad idea.  Since none of us have any say in that, I will leave that there....but he is better suited to Linebacker or Safety perhaps, but the line is alot to ask of someone that size.

To bulk up, give him a lot of protein.  Meats, nuts, eggs, maybe even a shake.  You dont have to be a good cook to make sure he has those options in his diet....in fact, at 14 he can probably make them himself.

Peanut Butter sandwiches are a GREAT way of bulking up without getting too creative.  Peanut Butter is packed with protein and the "good kind" of fat.  Get him a loaf of bread, a jar of his favorite peanut butter, and a knife......you are halfway to a beefy defensive juggernaut right there! ;)

  8. lots of boiled eggs(proteins) and carbs, have him raid the fridge and hit the gym...its the only safe and legal way.....

  9. dude lots of meat and potatoes. Every meal either steak, chicken, fish and some way of potatoes mashed baked and load it down with toppings. Also have him eat before he goes to bed everynight like PB&J or cereal. Never can skip breakfast always has to eat breakfast oatmeal, grits and eggs have lots of protein.
