  1. Some people have elevated cholesterol due to hereditary factors. In this situation, you need to know what your parents' levels are. But elevated cholesterol is also a result of excessive food consumption, especially of fats. And, before I forger it, did the doctor check your thyroid? Teens with low thyroid function have high cholesterol.

It would be helpful to know what your height and weight are to advise you further. Your doctor may be correct in advising you, not only to lose weight, but to improve your diet. Some people in your situation develop serious heart disease in their 30s or 40s. This is usually preventable, but don't wait until you are 29 .

  2. Changing your diet is the best way.  Visit your doctor and get a healthy diet plan for you; one that excludes the high cholesterol foods you have been eating (tell him honestly the types of food you eat) and as a result you will not only lose weight but your cholesterol count will go down to a healthy range.  Good idea to do this while you are still young because as you get older having high cholesterol carries a big health risk.  It is so much easier for you to change your diet/eating habits now than when you are older as well.

  3. There are two sources of cholesterol. One is what you eat and the other is what is MADE in your liver. Losing weight is not that simple. If it was there would be no obese people. The downside to doing nothing about this is heart attack. You might want to check into it a lot more before you get started on any drugs that the doctor might prescribe. Some of those have a downside and are expensive.

  4. At your age that is probably true, but I would also change my diet until you got it under control.

    Take your doctor's advice.
