Golf Update: 144th Espirito Santo Trophy- New Zealand placed 20th while United States tops after a decade
The first round of the 144th Espirito Santo Trophy world teams’ competition for women finished yesterday and witnessed the team New Zealand tied at the 20th place with The United States topping the boards.
The team from New Zealand carded a four-over 148 after the team collected scores of its two best golfers. The female golfers are known to be Caroline Bon and Cecilia Cho who ended their first round with a 75. The event held at the Olivos Golf Club observed
Lydia Ko after the 3 over scores to card a 77 with a 5 over.
According to the leader boards, team United States played a remarkable game after a full decade and topped the scoring panel for the lead. The team scored a total of 136 to end up with an 8 under and has the record of being one of the best teams in history.
The top rated team had its entire team performing brilliantly and included Cydney Clantor and Jessica Korda displaying their outstanding form.  The female golfers both carded a 68 with a four under and were chasing France's Alexandra Bonetti who had a one
stroke lead in the individual honours.
The event is being held in Argentina and has the host team behind the United States with a four shot deficit. The team is standing with team France along with team Germany, Taiwan, South Africa and Spain with a further two stroke deficit.
The eighth place has only one team ruling the ground known as team Mexico. The team is standing with a one under so that the under par is completed. The teams are playing on one of the most challenging and demanding fields one can imagine- the Olivos and
Buenos Aires golf courses.
According to Libby Steele who is the captain, the game had been tough. She said that the first round of the tournament isn’t exactly the type of start the team was looking for. The coach said that the girls played a very solid game even in such testing conditions.
Steele however was not happy about the key mistakes they made and said that had these mistakes never existed, the team probably would have collected a more competitive position on the leader boards.
Bon, who resides from Northland is the most experienced player in the team and had her collecting a 2 over after playing ten holes. The female golfer however, caught the grip of the game and played two back-to-back birdies. Bon played her 15th
hole with a drop shot and then carded a 73 with a one over.
Then there is the golfer from Auckland. Cho is a fifteen year old girl that started the game with a one under. She had played a good game at the start of the tournament and thus collected a birdie at the 15th hole. The fifteen year old collected
three strokes out of 4 but faltered at the 16th hole. She played her 16th with a double bogey which basically subdued the overall impact of her score.
From North Harbour, the female golfer Ko is the second youngest player in the field. The young golfer also had a good start and collected one birdie. Ko however weakened in her pace after she played three bogeys in her game. She further bogeyed again at
the 11th hole and then unfortunately double-bogeyed again at the difficult 16th hole.
No matter how the team played at the first round, the coach still has her hopes up and believes that the second round at the competitive field of fifty three nations will be better. After the first round ended, Libby Steele commented that no matter how disappointing
today was; tomorrow will be a lot better.
