  1. B - primary succession occurs when there is absolutely nothing there to start.  Even in a forest that is reduced to ash, there is a latent seed-cache in the soil.  This cache has actually been waiting for a fire to come along - most of those seeds require fire to germinate.  

    On a newly formed volcanic island, there's nothing - not even sand - there to start out.
