My son had his 15 month check up on Tusday, and got 4 shots that he has gotten before with no reaction.

This time he had a fever of 105. tuesday night, but it got down very quickly, but i noticed thursday night he had weird "bumps" on the side of his nose, Friday morning i saw a rash all over his belly and back, behind the knees and on side of his head. IT's not very noticeable, red in color and appears to be raised, but itsn't raised to the touch. It doesn't seem to bother him at all, it isn't itchy or scaly.

Could this be an allergic reaction to his shots even though he's had them before with no problemS?

  1. It is possible that it is an allergic reaction.  It is possible it isn't, but to be safe, you should get him into an allergist before his next shots.

My youngest has eczema and I took him to the allergist early.  We found out that he has an extreme allergy to eggs at 12m old and he had no egg exposures from shots (he is not vaccinated) he did have zwieback toast that has egg in it but very infrequently.  He was promptly given an epipen and we were told that for him to receive shots he would have to be hospitalized to control the reaction.  I said it wasn't a problem because he isn't getting them, so it does happen.

Personally I don't think his reaction is coincidence, but you will probably be told its a virus.  Allergies can be lifethreatening (anaphylaxis).  Make sure you write down what the shot was, his age and weight and all the reactions.  Even if no allergies are discovered from the allergist and you choose to continue to vaccinate, I strongly recommend pre-treatment with benadryl, wait for 15 minutes in the office after he receives the vaccine, and spread out the shots by only getting 1 at a time.

  2. Could be a reaction..most kids get one form or another sometime with shots. The rash could also be a heat rash...maybe from getting a fever too?? If the fever is gone and the rash doesn't bother him I wouldn't worry.

  3. i've had this issue several times with my daughter

it sounds like a heat rash brought on by the fever

many children get rashes during or after fevers it's very common

strip him down to diaper and keep him cool it should pass in a couple of hours

if it isnt gone by tomoro or gets worse (other than when he's warm) then take him to the doc asap

also if it does go away like a heat rash keep him inside for a couple of days to help his body get completly over it

  4. Did he get the MMR this time?  It's pretty common for kids to get a measles like rash after the MMR (about 5-10% of kids do).  Allergies don't cause a fever generally.  It's a different immune response in play with fever. It sounds more like side effects of the vaccines that can be scary but generally have no lasting effects.  As long as the rash fades and your little one seems otherwise fine, I'd say he's okay.

Check with your doctor just in case!

  5. It certainly could be - allergies can appear at any time, even to things children have been exposed to before. It is especially likely if they have been exposed only once before - first time, the body forms a defence for the allergen, next time, it attacks.

It could also be a co-incidence - I would take him to the doctor ASAP and be sure.

    Good luck!
