Question:

150 Evinrude drive failure?

I had my boat our yesterday, heard a bang (we hit something with the prop) and now the boat will not go into gear (forward or reverse). The shifter moves freely, and the lever on the engine moves (shift rod). Is there a sacrificial part in the drive system, or did we break a real expensive part.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Your description sounds like you have a broken drive-shaft.  One of those expensive parts.  This is relatively common and requires that the lower unit be disassembled and rebuilt.  In this case you might be better off looking for a boat-motor rig, that you can purchase for $1500 or so!  (the drive rebuild can be that or more)  Hopefully, you have boat insurance that will cover the repairs!

  2. A 150 hp engine does not use a shear pin. Shear pins are only on small engines like 10 hp. You prop has a rubber hub inside, when you hit something hard, the rubber hub spins loose. The term is "spun the hub".

Here's what you do: with the engine off, put the engine in gear. Now reach down and try to spin the prop with your hand, if you can spin it, you've "spun the hub". You will need to get the prop to a repair shop where a new hub can be installed. It is not a do it yourself project. It's possible, but unlikely you did damage to the transmission.

  3. Sounds like toy sheared the shear pin remove prop and replace it cheap fix good luck.

  4. David is probably correct in his diagnosis, and yes, just replace the prop if its dinged, as a damaged prop will eventually cause more wear on your lower end due to imbalance and subsequent vibration.

  5. don't waste your time looking for a sheer pin that isn't there, David's right you have a rubber bushing in the prop hub instead.

But what do you mean by "boat will not go into gear (forward or reverse)."?

What happens when the shifter moves, and the shift lever on the engine moves?

You can't feel it shifting gears like you used to?

If so then you've busted something expensive.  Drive shaft has nothing to do with the shifting but the gearset is pretty dang expensive.  Gearcase will have to be torn down for inspection.  Rebuild is a couple thousand at least -- better to look for a blown powerhead with a good lower.

Unless you have insurance -- then it's covered.

  6. Take the propeller off you might have sheared the pin that turns the propeller i did the same thing last weekend and it only cost me 20 dollars to fix it myself.
