With the training a 15Q receives, can one be a certified FAA ATC when thier ETS date comes? I see you need atleast three years experience and some college. What degrees can you get to help obtain an ATC job? I heard of Embry-Riddle University, but what degree matches to an ATC?

  1. Gary P are you stupid or something. Yes most ( 99% ) 15Q in the military you get a ATC certificate from the FAA.  Air Traffic Controller degree it can be a bachelors or associates it doesn't matter if your in the millitary. All air traffic controllers don't need a degree. Currently if you have 3 years of work experience or college experience or combined you can get in without any degree or military experience.

  2. No you will not qualify as an FAA controller when you leave the Army without further training.

Colleges like ERAU offer aviation related degrees (4 years) but all they do is put you in line to attend the FAA ATC academy at Oklahoma City. This is one of only two practical routes to being a controller, first is get through the Academy and second is for tower controllers only and that is to attend a private ATC course of which more and more are appearing. It will cost you about $80,000 to do so.

Both of these routes will qualify you as a developmental controller at an airport where you will spend another 2 to 4 years in training before you become a full blown Air Traffic Controller.
