  1. A couple of major makers started producing them again a few years ago but the ammo supply has not seemed to catch up.

A 16 is probably attractive to a collector so worth a bit more on average.

  2. Many 16 Gauge shotguns are likely becoming collectors items. But as with all collector firearms, value depends on make, model, and condition, more than the gauge alone. The 16 gauge has fallen out of favor of late, but are still excellent shotguns. I own several myself and like them very much, except for the high price of ammo. That can be easily overcome by reloading though. Like the 28 gauge, which used to be semi-popular among trap and skeet shooters, the 16's are fading into obscurity. But again, just because it's a 16 gauge, doesn't automatically make it any more valuable than any other shotgun.

  3. The advent of steel shot has caused a decline of the 16 and 20 gauges in the U.S. The 16 gauge is still very popular in Europe  even more popular than 12 gauge. So ammo will be around, more expensive but availible.  Sort of like the  22 Long Rifle vs the 22 Short. They still make shorts but they cost more than the 22lr  because they a niche market item in the U.S.

  4. I've noticed in some Blue Books, the 16 gauge version of some shotguns has a slightly higher price than the same shotgun in 12 or 20. As far as them being collector's items, it would depend a lot more on the actual gun. I have an old Lefever Nitro Special double that I got from my grandfather 40 years ago. I don't shoot it often, because I'm a little worried I might damage it, but it is still the best gun I have for plucking doves out of the sky.

  5. I don't know if they are becoming collector's items, but I can still find ammo for my Belgian Browning A-5 16ga and it is still dead on out to 100 yards; and if I can find a spare barrel to have a cantilever scope mount added to it, i'll bet it's great out to 150 yards...all with a smooth bore.

I love my 16ga....collector or not
