lowes 16 hp briggs acts as though bad starter..or drag on engine too hard to turn over..battery replaced..starter replaced.voltage to starter..12volt when key turned..starter solenoid works to allow voltage to starter..still acts like drag on engine putting strain on starter..turns barely then stops as like bad battery..this is a ovh 16 hp. any help would be appreciated

  1. sounds if engine may be strained......

remove spark plug and try to turn over, remember it wont start, but the engine should rotate freely.

if not you may have something barring the engine itself. check to see if anything physical is jamming.

if it does rotate freely, squirt some ether in the carburetor to help the starter in the firing sequence.

  2. I am going to take a shot here.  If you put a new battery and starter on it, it would make sense that the soleniod is at least part of the problem.  They make contact with a simple strip of copper pushed against two large copper bolt heads.  They get burned and won't carry the load needed to run the starter.  You can get 12 volts but it won't carry the amps.  It is possible that your starter and battery were not bad to start.

  3. Try jump starting it with a real battery(like in a car). Most lawn mowers have too small a battery and the minimum of cable ga. they can get away with.If it still doesn't start then I 'll need a model number/make (but probably starter)
