We've had our cat for a year. we cant get her to the vet cos she's had a really bad time before we rescued her, she's only just started to let us touch her. She eats like a horse and has always been skinny but now she looks exsessicly skinny. Could this just be her age?

  1. A similar thing happened to our cat-she started eating more and more but lost a lot of weight.  We did take her to the vet, who thought at first that it could be to do with her thyroid.  After a lot of tests, they really couldn't work out what was wrong with her.  It might just be age, ours was 17, and she carried on like that for a few years before she got worse.

  2. Sounds like she may have Hypothyroidism, does she get more excited for her food than usual or is she behaving more kittenish or active? My late cat had these symptoms and we discovered that she had this condition. This illness causes the body to speed up its mechanism eg extra fast heartbeat, hyper behaviour etc.

  3. Yes and no.  It could be that she has contracted worms.  Check her stoles and see if she has worms in it.  She might throw up worms too if it becomes a really bad case.  There is medicine you can get from the pet store to take care of this.  Otherwise, I would say it could be something fatal like feline leukemia.  But check for worms first.

  4. old age and thyroid problems go hand in hand , get her tested

  5. WIthout an exam and possibly bloodwork there's just no way to know, there's a lot of diseases that can cause this and at her age it's not uncommon for kitties to develop hyperthyroidism, diabetes, kidney disease, etc.. Try taking her in a pillow case if you can't get her to go into a carrier. Or get a carrier and leave it open in the house for a few days with some of her favorite things inside so that she gets more used to it. You can try putting food or bedding material she likes so that it becomes a comfort place for her.

  6. there could be an issue with  tape worms  the best way would be to take to her a vet, but if you cant just yet maybe saving a sample  after she has done her "business"  and take that  instead they might also be ale to give you a de-wormer

  7. I think you should struggle but get her to the vet, or get a vet to come to your house. I wish you luck :P

  8. she is old, old cats get kidney problems, and loose weight, keep and eye on her

  9. A healthy cat, regardless of age, should look/act healthy.  Rapid weight loss is a sign of illness.  Take her to the vet.

  10. could be tapeworm, diabetes, thyroid problems, or even cancer. PLEASE take your cat to the vet for a complete senior work up and diagnostic testing. how the heck is anyone online going to know what is wrong with your poor cat. not even a real vet could give you a dx over the internet.

  11. I happen to agree with dances with cats. I do not know why you are being rude to them. I thought they gave you a very helpful answer and were giving you ideas as to what it could be. People on Yahoo Answers can not tell you. Get a hav-a-heart trap and trap her and take her to the vet.

Added- I just emailed dances and it seems that you have blocked her. Why would you do that? She gave a good answer, even the vet tech said the same thing.
