I just turned 16 and I live in New Jersey. I've heard various things about turning 16 in regards to opening a savings account in your own name, or getting an atm card, etc.

With parental consent (if I need it) what am I able to do at this point in time?

  1. not just their consent but their signature; you can open accounts

anywhere but then it is not your acct only, it is a shared acct.

and don't be aggressive about putting $ into a bank acct

whose interest rate is below 3% a year; when I was younger

    it was 19% a year!

  2. You should be able to open a student account without a  parent being on the account or even having to be with you. But different banks want different things so go in to the bank your would want to open the account at and just ask the terms for opening a student account.

  3. Hey, I live in NJ too. I'm 17 and I recently made my own account and debit card. Yes, you can make those when you are 16 with your parents consent.

The only thing you can't do is make your own visa card.

  4. Yes, you can have your own Savings account in your name, but you might also have to open up a checking account with it. It depends what bank you belong to.
