I run the 1600 and the 800 in track. My second meet is thursday, and i did really bad the first meet (times of 7.37 and 3.31). I would like some tips for the race. We have been training well in track and Im getting better, so its not that. I want RACE tips please. Ive been told to run about 100m from the leader then kick it the last part (200m for the mile and 100m for the 800). Any experience? Any thing that I could try would be great, and my compettition for this meet is running between 5.57-7.17 miles. I know I can do better, I just need help doing it

  1. For now, I would recommend dividing the race into quarters (laps for the 1600, halflaps for the 800).

Focus on running even splits.  So pick a time you think you can handle (say a 7:20 1600), divide it by four (440 secs/4 = 110 secs per lap).  Hit those splits on the first three quarters, and then see what you have left.  If you do something like 110, 110, 110, 100 you saved too much and you should aim for a faster time next time.  If you do 110, 110, 110, 130 then you bit off more than you can chew, slow it down.  Once you get your splits more or less even, work on improving them.

    Good luck.

  2. my main run is the 800 but it seems there is a lot of tips for that already, there isnt much to add on to those, but for the 1600 a good tip is to run the 3rd lap hard and bring it in the last lap. i mean run well the first half mile but whatever you run for the fist half try to run faster on your 3rd lap because thats where people get tired so you can improve if you try that

  3. I also run the 800M and 1600M, and my first meet is tomorrow. This is my third year being on a track team (8th grade now). Here are my tips for the 800M, but some of it applies to the 1600M too. Be sure to try not to get into a small race with another person. By this, I mean that, if the person passes you, then you pass that person, and you keep passing each other, you're wasting energy. Only pass the person and just reach a pace that you know you can sustain. Never lead a race if you know you can't keep the same pace. The first lap should be strong, but not too strong. The part about pushing it as hard as you could in the 800M with 100 meters to go could be better. You should really start speeding up some more with 300M to go, even faster at 200M to go, and shift into a complete sprint at whatever you feel you can do. You would know by listening to your body. I'm not the best with tips in the 1600M. Good luck.

  4. Run so d**n hard that you will turn blue and pass out once you get to the finish line, trust me this worked for me, this is the only way you will see fine results.

  5. hey i am a state 800 runner...

Half of running is your diet, the other half is your mindset

My race day consists of a big, healthy breakfast and lunch.  then about 4 hours before my first race I eat a(1) granola bar.  then i wont eat until one hour before my first race, and i eat about 10 grapes.  Then I run...

There are two common ways to run an 800

sprint the first 400, then give it all you got the last 400 and hope you make it

    OR

run your first 400 about 4 seconds less then half of your best time (so if you run a 3.30 min 800, youd want to run your first lap in 1.11) then give it all you got your second lap

I really dont know much about the mile.. sorry

    good luck!!

  6. I cant agree more with Mike. Just run run run. Get the experience and listen to your body. We don't not what you are capable of. If I was there I'd cheer you on and give u advice but I am not so run the race as best as you can, do not hold back. You've got down how to finish both races in your mind but  what matters the most is you being on the track and *running it.

    Best of luck!
