The "Red Terror" was associated with the Communist (Bolshevik) Revolution in Russia which after the 1917Communist Revolution changed it's name to "the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics."

This link shows that the Red Terror was known in Soviet Russia as the campaign of mass arrests and executions by the Communist government in Moscow.

It was officially in effect from Sept 2nd 1918 till October 1918

The purpose of the Red terror was to execute and get rid of people who were considered to be counter-revolutionaries who did not support the Communist Revolution of 1917.

Here is the source to back up that statement:

Purpose of the Soviet Red Terror

The Red Terror was claimed to be introduced in reply to White Terror. The stated purpose of this campaign was struggle with counter-revolutionaries considered to be enemies of the people. Many Russian communists openly proclaimed that Red Terror was needed for extermination of entire social groups or former "ruling classes". Lenin planned the terror in advance. In 1908 he had written of "real, nation-wide terror, which reinvigorates the country".[6] Communist leader Grigory Zinoviev declared in September 1918:

"To overcome of our enemies we must have our own socialist militarism. We must carry along with us 90 million out of the 100 million of Soviet Russia's population. As for the rest, we have nothing to say to them. They must be annihilated."[7]

For many people the major evidence of their guilt was their social status rather than actual deeds. Martin Latsis, chief of the Ukrainian Cheka, explained in newspaper "Red Terror":

"Do not look in the file of incriminating evidence to see whether or not the accused rose up against the Soviets with arms or words. Ask him instead to which class he belongs, what is his background, his education, his profession. These are the questions that will determine the fate of the accused. That is the meaning and essence of the Red Terror."[8]

Be sure to click on to the above link and read all about what happened in the "Red Terror" and yes it is most associated with Russia.

Sadly today there is always a "knee-jerk reaction" in naming Germany whenever there is a reference to "terror" or mass murders and concentration camps.

All too often we only focus on Germany.  But in the Soviet Union there were many mnay more death camps known as labor camps or Gulags in which maybe as many as 30 to 40 million people were tortured to death and were "worked" to death in harsh conditions and bitter cold in the siberian north and far eastern regions of Siberia.  There were many more of these concentration camps operating for decades in the Soviet Union as compared to the amount in Germany and poland during the WW2 period.

Both systems of death camps in both countries were horribly cruel and are a stain on Human History. The sad thing is that we never focus on the cruelness of the Soviet gulag system but always we are reminded of the "concentration camps from WW2.

Both are examples of terrible holocausts which should be remembered.

Anyway sorry for wandering away from the point..  Yes the "Red Terror" is associated with Russia and the link gives much information on how the Red Terror came about and what happened during that time.
