Hi I'm 17 and from NY. I've been driving since last April and I recently passed my road test. The thing is, I'm sort of scared to drive alone since I've never done it before. Has anyone else been through this or can give me any tips on how to overcome this fear?

  1. I know how you feel drive at your own comfort  level,I've got an AZ license and many commercial jobs make me nervous, be cautious but step lively in traffic pay full attention to the road keep glancing at your two mirrors, confidence comes with experience

  2. i was the same exact way!!! i started driving on less busy roads and then worked my way up to the busier streets as i got more and more comfortable! now i love driving!!!! Good Luck Sweetie!

  3. You should be. Driving a car is driving a bomb with wheels. Being nervous will keep you alert and aware, and probably give you the strength to be an idiot and talk on your cell phone simultaneously.

(I don't mean to be rude, but mythbusters actually proved talking on your cell phone while driving is actually as dangerous as drunk driving.)

  4. Well. I was afraid the first time i got behind the wheel. Then my dad took me to a rookie race track so i could do some laps. after you do 50 laps @ 180 mph, 25 isnt bad. at all. lol

  5. yup at first i was very anxious about it but i just told to myself that as long as i am just be very careful i drive straight and on the right path and not so speed and does not care if people will honk me for i drive to slow and also, confidence is a must before i dont have thois atitude but it shows . also some tip think that you can!

  6. Omgah I was scared shitless when I first got my license!! Suprisingly I got my license on my first try! Ahhh

I had my mom drive around with me often for the first 3 weeks!! And I usually never drove on the highway in less I had an extra pare of eyes lol

Just try to always look around and always make shure you know whats going on and you will be ok!

With time your fear will go away

Just be glad you have your license

  7. Start with short trips and expand them as your confidence grows.

  8. Yea, I have that too.

Listening to music always helps me. Maybe a little louder than normal. ;D

  9. don't be scared of something you never tried. music blasting definitely helps. and don't let other drivers rush you. i remember i used to freak out when someone road my bumper, they aren't going to hit you. take your time. and RELAX. by relaxing, you become more observant and can make clear decisions. :)

    hope that helped

  10. yeah, it's called growing up.

  11. Nope, you're pretty much alone on this.

Deal with it and you'll get over it. Or, get a dog and bring him around.

  12. We have all been there.  I would just start by running to the gas station, grocery store, etc for your parents.  Or just drive around your neighborhood by yourself for a little while, like a friends house that used to walk to etc.  you will get your self confidence eventually, just take your time so that you know you are a experienced driver.
