  1. I have here standing on my desk an empty .17 HMR and an unfired .22LR. The .22 is slightly smaller in diameter, but is too long for the chamber.

I don't have a .22 long to compare, but I am sure it would also be too long. Now comes the .22 short. It is too small diameter and too short for the chamber. Now if you did chamber it and the firing pin could contact the rim and detonate the primer, NO damage to the gun would result as no .22 that will fit in the chamber develops enough pressure.  The bullet would enter the necked down area and plug the barrel. The .22 WMR is way too long.

I trust you to take my word for it and not try it to see. The .22 bullet will be hard to get out.

  2. I agree mate......defo no. You'll s***w the rifling if nothing else (that's if you get it up the spout!!)

  3. The diameter of a .17 HMR bullet is .172 inch. The diameter of a .22 LR bullet is .223 inch. The diameter of a .22 WMR bullet is .224 inch. Assuming you can even get the round to chamber (which I doubt would happen), if you try to fire a bullet over .22 hundredths of an inch in diameter in a gun designed to fire a bullet slightly over .172 thousandths of an inch in diameter you'll likely damage your gun (IE split a barrel, blow out a breach block, etc...). Don't try it. You should only use ammunition which is intended to be used in your gun.

  4. ABSOLUTELY NOT.  THAT IS DANGEROUS AND WOULD LIKELY CAUSED INJURY

  5. No you can't fire a .17 HMR with .22 LR bullets nor the other way around.  You couldn't even do it by swapping barrels (a very costly proposition) since the .17 HMR is based on the .22 Magnum rather than the .22 LR.  Guns are caliber specific.

  6. NO. NO. A thousand times NO!

The bore and bullet are of different sizes.

    Just look at them.

  7. You've got a .17 caliber, and a .22 caliber, the .22 is larger and will not shoot thru a .17, the cases are also way different.

  8. The difference between .17 and .22 is the first signifiant reason why you can't.  The bore is too small in diameter.  Since the .17 HMR is made from the .22 WMR, it may be possible to jam a .22LR cartridge in the chamber, but the results of firing it would be disasterous.

  9. Read this very carfefully: Use only ammo that is an EXACT match for your weapon!!!!!!!!!!!  The markings on the box, or bullet casing should be exactly he same as what is stamped/engraved on the gun.

The .17 is a much smaller bullet than a .22, The casing are the same size.  Technically the .17 wouldn't chamber, since the .22 was so much larger, but if it did, and you pulled the trigger, bad things would likely happen.

You could kill yourself, or someone else, or horribly mangle/disfugure yourself.  Hang around shooting ranges long enough and you'll see old-timers with "lobster claws"  that a surgeon has created out of what was left of their mangled hands after a weapon blew-up.

There are ofcourse exceptions to the stamp rule (.38 in a 357, 44SP in a 44 Mag) but the in general never deviate from the rule until you have been around guns for quite a while and understand those subtle nuances!

  10. no

  11. In a brief answer, h**l NO!!!  It may be possible for someone to chamber a .22 rimfire cartridge in a .17 HMR chamber but if you fired it, you could damage your gun and possibly yourself.  The .22 bullet is too big to go down the bore of the .17 caliber rifle

  12. no

    and

    no

For starters, both the case and the bullet are different sizes.  The 17 HMR has a .17 diameter bullet, the 22LR a .22 diameter bullet.  The 17 HMR case is actually thicker and longer, so while the 22LR cartridge would rattle around the empty bolt, the bullet would not fit down the barrel if you tried to close the action.

a 22 WMR case is the same size as a 17HMR case, but again, the bullet is too big for the 22WMR to fit.

The 22 WMR bullet size is the same as the .22LR, but because the 22LR is too short, it wouldn't work

You could probably fire a 17 HMR in a 22WMR if you were in an emergency situation, but it would be extremely inaccurate and loose a LOT of power because there would be so much extra room around the bullet.

  13. NO!!!! It is a necked-down 22 magnum with a .17 caliber bullet. Not only are you going to s***w up the chamber and barrel, you're going to take a chance of getting hurt in the process.

  14. NO.

It won't chamber at all. The .17HMR is based on the .22 Mag, which has a longer case, beside the fact that a .22 bullet won't fit in a .17 cal. barrel. . . .
