My fish died, so i'm looking to buy some more.

I have a 17L tank.

I want to get quite a few very small coldwater fish.

Anybody got any ideas of what breed and how much they cost and how many could live in 17L tank?

  1. That's not quite 5 gallons so the only cold water fish you could keep in it would be white cloud minnows and probably no more than 3.  There aren't very many cold water fish to choose from.

If you keep the tank in a warm room you could probably keep a trio of guppies or 2 platies if the water temperature would stay in the low 70's.

  2. That's roughly a 4-1/2 gallon tank and the general rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish for every gallon of water. Since a fish had died in the tank, I would suggest before adding new fish, to strip the tank down and completely clean it out to avoid contamination in case the fish had been diseased. Remember though to cycle your tank and add a chlorine neutralizer. Gold Barbs may be a suitable fish as they are very hardy and typically reach a maximum of about 2 to 3 inches and can be kept at room temperature without a heater. They cost around 3 dollars each. My daughter has a small tank with 4 of these and they appear to be doing quite well.

  3. For US gallon minded people like me, that's about 4.5 gallons.   There are not many fish that you could put a few of in a tank that size.

    3 male guppies.

    A trio (1 m, 2 f) killifish.  I like A. gardneri (also known as F. gardneri).

Or a dozen of the world's smallest fish (about 8mm), Paedocypris progenetica, but I doubt they're available.

Please no White Clouds.  Although cold water and fairly small, their schooling needs (6 or more fish) as well as need for a long tank (very active swimmers) make them a poor choice.

  4. ok this is quite a small tank you have so you dont have the best selection but there are tropical fish that will be fine in a unheated tank i wouldnt recomend goldfish as they grow huge i think if you get a group of white cloud mountain minnows that would be you best bet they are small do not need heated tanks good to look at and very much over looked by people i reccomend you look them up on wikipedia and see what you think

  5. Your tank is about 5 gallons, so no Goldfish whatsoever. I think a school of White Cloud Mountain Minnows would be best for a smaller tank like that. Here's some care sheets on them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Cloud...

A school of 3-5 would be best, as long as you have a decent sized filter.

    E-mail me for any questions!

  6. your tank is about 4 gallons. 4 white cloud minnows would do good in there, I also have to agree with no goldfish! Or rosy red minnows, you can get them cheap at petsmart b/c they are sold as feeder fish, but lots of them will be sick. Good luck!
