Question:

18,000BTU A/C Window Unit Problem

We have an 18,000btu window unit a/c,and have to run it continously in the GA. heat!It drains,but still looks like it has a fair amount of water in the bottom(in the back part of the unit)Now,when I first turn it on in the a.m.,it has an unpleasant smell for the first minute or so, then goes away..anyone have any idea what this could be caused from?Thanks!

  1. Try spraying Lysol all over the coil on the inside to kill the mold . Do this a few times and let it dry out between blast.


  2. You  may need to tip it more to the outside and make sure the drain pipe is cleaned thoroughly. Sounds like you have a buildup of mold.

  3. The smell is due to the accumulated water in the drain tray. You either need to clean the drain hole if this problem is new or change the slope so that the water does not stay for long and clears out from the tray if the problem has been from the time of install.
