18-member English men’s national hockey squad selected for London Cup
An 18-member England’s national hockey squad has been selected for the upcoming London Cup hockey tournament which is going to be played from July 12-16, at University of Westminster Sports Ground in London, England. The four teams will be among the contenders,
which are South Korea, New Zealand and Belgium along with the hosts, England.
The squad includes ten Olympians, including Barry Middleton, the skipper, James Tindall, the high-powered goal-scoring machine and Richard Mantell, the drag flick specialist. Along with the seasoned and experienced players, there are also some young and
fresh hockey players, like the 18-year-old, Harry Martin, who have been selected in the national side for the event.
The tournament is a part of the English team’s preparation plan for the European Championship which will be conducted in August 2011, in Germany. The English side will take part in the European Championship as a defending Champion because they won the title
two years ago.
“I’m really looking forward to getting the chance to run out in front of a home crowd at The London Cup. With so much excitement around the Olympic Games this is a great opportunity for people to come and see us and find out a bit more about hockey. I think
anyone who isn’t familiar with hockey will be very impressed with the speed and skill. It’s bound to capture people’s imagination.” Barry Middleton, the English skipper and two times Olympian, said.
“It’s great to have a tournament at home. It will be difficult and the games will be of a very high standard but I hope we can put on a good show for the home crowd,” Jason Lee, the head coach of the English men’s national hockey team, further added about
the tournament.
