Question:

18 month old too young for a toddler/big bed?

my 18 mo old daughter learned to climb out of the crib at 16 months. we were able to put an end to this by turning the crib around so that the front was against the wall(the back is about 3 or4 inches taller). this has worked until today. now there is no stopping her from climbing out. is she too young to convert to a toddler day bed? any tips for an easy transition? i have always just been able to put her in her bed and she will go to sleep on her own...now im worried that with the freedom to get in and out of bed, this wont be so easy! any advice would be great!! :)

  1. I have a 17 month old and he has a cot-bed, the single bed size cot with the bars which go all the way around, this has been great, the sides come off for when he is a little older, as i don't know about your toddler but if i put mine into a "proper" single bed he would play games in and out of it all night! :)

  2. I don't think so, I was climbing out of my crib at 12 months so my parents put me into a big bed with a rail on the side. I'm in college now but nothing bad ever happened. Keep confort items around like stuffed animals and blankets.

  3. i made the switch when my son was about 17 months.  i took him to the store to pick out which bed he wanted and what sheets for it.  we set it up together in the a.m. and by lunchtime he had climbed in it himself and fell asleep on it.  took the crib down 2 days later and never looked back!

  4. she's not to young for a toddler bed. you can also go with a twin bed with removable railings so you can just take them down as she gets older that way you aren't buying her another bed in a few years.

  5. Here's what we're doing:

take the mattress out of the crib and place it on the floor. Leave the crib, as this might be traumatizing.

Take her to pick out some sheets, make it really special, maybe a stuffed animal.

Let the animals "sleep" there during the day. Check on them frequently and talk it up- how comfy they are, how special to sleep like a big kid.

Be prepared for some resistance at night, be understanding but firm.

    Good luck.

  6. I think there's no problem in it at all. A tumble out of the big girl bed is a lower drop than out of the crib. She will try to escape I'm sure. We didn't have that problem but a friend of mine did and they just stayed with their daughter til she fell asleep. It'll take some time, but worth the investment!

We made a big deal about the special big boy bed for our son. We had bought a crib that converted into a toddler bed, so we had him watch daddy turn his crib into a bed. He really got a kick out of it. I got him to help me put the blanket on, and then he picked some of his stuffed animals "babies" live in the corner of his bed. He had great fun and hasn't mentioned to crib since. He was about 20 months when we did this.

  7. i moved my daughter in a big bed when she was about 18 months and she was fine i had a rail made at the side so she cant fall out,i would say the only problem is her getting out of her room can she open the door? other then that she never changed her sleeping habbits but she has always been a bad sleeper anyway im sure your child will be fine they cant stay in the cot forever and its safer then her climbing out.
