he eats with his fingers pretty much everything we give him expect his oatmeal in the morning, i feed him that, he is starting to use a fork and spoon but hasnt figured it out yet, but the main problem i am having is that he stuffs as much food in his mouth as he can, he chews it but never swallows and just keeps sticking it in there, he hasnt choked but i am worried that he might, but what do i do to get him to swallow after he chews

he will usually chew it all up and then somehow manages to get it down, we havent figured out how he does it since he has alot in there, but sometimes he takes it out and puts it back on his plate and then eats it the normal way...

im a first time mom and im just lost on what to do....help!!!

  1. Try giving him one bite at a time and then offering a sippy cup. This may help him to get the message that he needs to chew one bite at a time and then swallow. Don't put all his food on the tray at the same time. Talk to him and keep telling him to swallow and then you will give him more. Never give him more until he swallows the first bite. This is pretty common for kids this age they are still learning to eat properly. Make sure you eat with him and try to get him to watch you and how you take a bite and then swallow. Just make it fun for him! He will get there! Good Luck!

  2. Stop him when he does this.  If you have to give him ONE thing at a time and don't give him more until he has swallowed the first thing he put into his mouth.

  3. My 16-month-old daughter does this sometimes too.  Pretty gross when they spit it out and then pick it back up and eat it, right?  I let her do it though because I want her to get as much down the hatch as possible since she's pretty thin.  With my daughter we do pretty much what another answerer said.  We just give her small amounts of food at a time.  I think it's just a phase that they'll get through.

  4. First off tell your child something like, "I bet the food will tayse better if you take smaller bites!!!" And if that doesn't work, tell ask him why he is doing this, and if no reason comes about tell the child somthing, like, "You better eat slowwer or you might get choked!!!" Hope this Works

  5. When I mentioned that my 14 month old did this to a developmental specialist she said he probably has a sensory issue and they are working on that.  We're getting him set up with a development therapist and a speech therapist.

He's is and will be just fine.  Early intervention works wonders.

    Good Luck
