18 year old birth certificate typo :(

I'm 18 and I had to dig through my mom's papers to get my birth certificate while she was gone (cause she didn't care that it is now legally mine ).I just realized...my legal name is spelled "Stephanne" instead of "Stephanie" as I've BEEN spelling it my entire life.My Social security is spelled correctly...but my ID is now "Stephanne" as well since they didn't want to take the social security spelling of it.

What can I do about this? It's not a NAME CHANGE...It's a CORRECTION.My mom already fixed it before and they didn't do it right so I guess she just decided, s***w it.Now I'm stuck explaining this anytime I take a flight or am asked for my ID AND my social.

  1. Call or visit your state's vital records department.  They'll be able to tell you how to get the form (usually called an Application for Correction).

  2. Change it asap. My mom had a similar problem with her ID's- her Chinese passport and American greencard had different last names since in Asia the wife doesn't take on the husband's last name. Guess what, we were unfortunate enough to bump into some very anal airline personnel (Canada Airlines), and she was forced to buy a new ticket for the same seat we booked already due the the name discrepancy :/
