My little sister is graduating in december. She lives in a tiny town 4 hours away. She has never had a job and doesn't have a car. She is moving up here to go to community college. SHe plans on finding a job getting a car and going to school. I know other people have done this but is it really possible? I have helped her find the cheapest apt thats around here and took her up to the school to talk with a consiler. She has no idea what to expect. Will she have to work full time and go to school full time? Noone in our family can help. I can help a little like letting her stay at my house untill she gets a job and a car. But I don't have room for her and I live far from the school. ANy advice??Can she do this??

  1. Yes she can do this. It will be hard and rough at first. If she is determined to do this and willing to sacrifice most of her social life , then yes she can. But I would advise her to get into a work study program at her college. She will get work experience while in school. She might can get a job on the weekends. When I went to college back in the 90's I majored in childcare, and when I wasn't in class I worked in the kitchen part of the daycare. I enjoyed it, got to make food for the little ones, and sample the food.

  2. Have her look into work study and see if she can get a job that way.  The college is a lot more understanding with jobs then some employers.

  3. If she works hard and has a lot of determination, then she can do it. She just has to put her mind into it!

  4. It is possible, but it takes ALOT of determination and hard work.  She needs to get a job that understand that school is #1 and can't work when she has classes, so hopefully could work weekends and then nights.  She has to realize this is going to be ALOT of work, but it can be done, although her social life will take a huge hit.

  5. Have her contact the college

At colleges, sometimes, people that need childcare or help with an older parent will post jobs, live in, take care of children or parent

I knew several people that did that

My brother rented a room, that  rent to college students, it was cheap, and came with breakfast and dinner

I worked at the college, like many students

My brother had a car, worked at the college, and delivery pizza on the weekends.  Made good money on tips

  6. The school has something called "work study" the school hires you, with no experience. They work with your schedule and train you. Tell her to look into it before mid July. Thats when they assign all the positions.
