Question:

184 Pin RAM in a 240 Pin motherboard?

I just got a computer with a motherboard that is made for 240 Pin RAM, I don't have any on hand, but I have some 184 Pin, will that run in it or will it not even boot up? I'm curious, cuz I'd rather not spend the 40 bucks on a 2 gig stick of 240 Pin when I could just use some 184 Pin that I already have.

  1. Mercuri is right, to an extent. But Cheap RAM usually operates at a lower clock speed, and the pin contacts are usually of lower quality. You might get what you pay for.

  2. The 184 pin ram you have is DDR Sdram. The 240 pin ram is DDR2 Sdram. NO, it will not work! Looks like it should fit, until you see that the DDR2 has smaller contact pins. Each pin has it's job. Whether it's to get voltage to the ram sticks, or transfer data back and forth,(Signal pins)

It's time to spend $40 bucks, and get sum ram. PC6400? (800MHz DDR2 Sdram) Hmmm,

Edit: Pretty sure, Corsair XMS2 ram is not cheap quality ram!

lol! (Corsair Dual Channel TwinX) 2GB's of Two->1GB sticks. $27 bucks after rebate!

  3. 184 pin RAM will not fit in a 240 pin Mobo.

  4. It won't work. The only way you'd get it to go into the slot would be to use a hammer and pound it in - and it's work the way you'd expect any piece of delicate electronics to do when pounded on with a hammer.

They are totally and utterly incompatible.

  5. Not only will it not boot, it might damage the board, it could put voltages out onto wrong pins.

  6. Some board have DDR1 and DDR2 slots-but very rare-I don't think you have one or you would know.

    NO it will NOT fit.

  7. It will not work.  Even assuming you COULD shove it in there (you can't, though you can try) the memory timings, clock cylces, voltage, speed, etc is all wrong.  You need the RAM specific for your motherboard.  And $40 for 2GBs of RAM is CHEAP.  Go ahead and get the RAM.

  8. It will not work
