Found a 1878 Silver Liberty dollar...every little wear but tranished badly. What it worth...can it be cleaned and improve its' value..Detail is still very good. Suspect that it has been in the wall where I found since around the 1880's when this house was built.

  2. We kind of run into a problem with the 1878 Morgan dollars. it was the first year and the Philadelphia mint could not make up it's mind as to what to do. Before I go on the coins from Philly have no mint mark but the ones from the other mints at that time do. The mint mark if any is on the eagle side near the bottom below the wreath. I will tell you about the coins but you may need to see a coin dealer or two, or a coin club member. 1878-8 tail feathers value $23-$35, 1878-7 tail feathers $16.25-$18.50,1878-7 over 8 tail feathers $16.50-$30, 1878 7 tail feathers parallel top arrow feathers $16.25-$1950, 1878-7 tail feathers slanted top arrow feathers $16.25-$19.50. The arrows are in the eagles claw and the tail feathers under them.  There is also the 1878-CC (Carson City Mint) $75-$95 and 1878 S $16.25-$20 (San Francisco mint). Values are about what a dealer would pay. Do not clean the coin for you could damage it and then it is worth only the silver in it. Cleaning does not improve value, the story behind how you found it might.
