18k White Gold Rhodium Plated ?? what does the rhodium mean?

i was looking at jewelery online and it said that, i understand the plated part, that its not solid gold, but i don't entirly understand that^. please explain!

Rhodium is a member of the platinum group of metals and used in jewelery mainly for it's hardness and anti tarnish properties. The hardness helps prevent scratches in the softer 18 carat gold. Platinum group metals are more expensive than gold however one word of caution it often plated over silver items for the same reasons!
