Question:

19 month old not wanting to nap?

My 19 month old has always done really well with sleeping. We usually rock him just a minute or two to signal sleep time, lay him down, and he'd go to sleep. He still does great at night, but at naptime for the past 2 days he has laid down, stayed quiet a minute or two, then started playing in bed. Then he starts crying. I usually do cry it out, but it doesn't seem to be working for naps. How long do I let him go on like this before getting him?

  1. My daughter is 20 months old, and gave up naps months ago. My rule was that if it took me as long to get her to sleep as she actually slept, then it wasn't worth it.

But why do you use the CIO method? Why not make bedtime a nice, peaceful time, rather than the time where he has to cry in bed by himself? There are tons of ways to get a toddler to sleep without crying.

  2. He could be starting to give up naps.  Stop trying to make him sleep when he doesn't want to.

  3. My son is 19 months old and he is pretty good with sleeping too, i think when they get older, to this age, some toddlers don't need that nap time some days, as my son always had daytime naps and now he rarely does, if he is obviously tired then i put him down and he will take ages to drop off too, but i just leave him and eventually he goes down, but also saying that sometimes he doesn't so i just get him back out, and make him have a "quiet time" watching a DVD or something. But yeah, most days now he doesn't nap and if he does it's for about an hour if that, whereas before he used to have 2-3 hours. I think it's normal, as they get older they need less naps :)

  4. He may not understand  but you can explain to him that it is sleep time and mommy is going to put him to bed.

Then do it.  If he notices you are coming back to get him than he will not calm down at all. It has only been 2 days I would give it a day or 2 more of leaving him in there. (I am sure he is totally safe in his bed) He may just be going through a stage but you dont want his new stage to ruin the progress you have made so far.

    good luck
