while picking my son up from nursery one of the staff asked to speak to me about my sons speach ( i thought he had been swearing ha) they think he is slow in his talking. i was quite taken back reallly because i was totally shocked, my son has is quite big for his age and tall and does look a lot older than is age, he has been really quick at every thing else ,solids ,crawling and walking before he was one!

she advised me to contact my health visitor, which alarmed me even more. he does say mum, dad hiya and ta ta.

DO I HAVE CAUSE FOR CONCERN ??

he is my first!

  1. Is that ALL he says (what you listed) or is that just a few? My son is 19months and says: Daddy, Nan nan, Grandad, Calls my sister and friend and friends babies by name, dog and woof woof, cat and meow, cow and moo etc Ball, helicopter, car, airplane, Hello ... (name), bye bye ... (name) see you soon, that's just a few, i am not "bragging" but giving you an idea of what my son does at 18 months, he says some things clearly and others he's still trying to pronounce them properly, if YOU are concerned then get him checked, if there's something i have definatley noticed since becoming a mother, it is that ALL kids are different! I wish you the best of luck :)

  2. NO NOT AT ALL.YOU COULD GO TO A HEALTH VISITOR FOR ADVISE,BUT SOME KIDS ARE JUST SLOWER TO START TALKING

DON'T GIVE IT ANOTHER MOMENTS THOUGHT...........

  3. i'd say  you have nothing to worry about.... the way a child communicates is much more important than how many actual words he says... he does say some words.... honestly, at 19 months, most babies don't say many words... if you think he communicates alright, then he's totally fine...

  4. they cant all be quick at everything , my son was good at talking but didnt walk til about 16 months and he 4 now n still in night nappies , my daughter just turned one and saying a few words but not yet walking

can he say things like mummy , dad , ta , hiya , yes , no bye etc and maybe a frew others ?

my friends boy nearly 2 n he not talk much either

is his hearing okay , sometimes if they have a blockage or even partial deafness this will affect speech and you may not know

yes see your health visitor or doctor , see what they say , but dont worry too much , some kids are slower at things but will soon catch up

  5. I wouldn't worry too much. My mother told me I hardly spoke a word until I was 2 and then suddenly stared talking in sentences. I have a 135iq.

My daughter is 21 months, is now speaking 3 and 4 word sentences and can count to 10. 2 Months ago she wasn't saying much more than you have described. Also, boys can be a bit slower with speach.

Mybe take him to get checked out just for peace of mind, but it doesn't sound like too much to worry about.

    Good luck!

  6. no you don't

some of these health visitor and nursery teacher have never had children there just going of statistics he will talk when he is ready

  7. Get him a book on tongue twisters or get him reading something. He will always get smarter from that and If he watches the history channel he might talk even slower.

  8. Tell them they dont have a clue what they are talking about and they need to re-train!!! In fact if i were you i'd move him to a better nursery. That is disgusting. 19 months old is not an age that they should be worrying about him talking.

You have no cause for concern what so ever. I am appalled!!!

  9. my doctor told me that around 18 - 20 months of age a child should be saying 50 words.. thats perfect & normal.. my daughter is 18 months old & is talking short sentences like "mommy i am hungry" or "mommy i got to go potty" & her speech is classified more as a 3 1/2 year old.. So i say 50 words would be great for his age.. i'd say by 2 if he isnt saying close to 100 i'd say something to his doctor, maybe hire someone who can work with him for a couple of hrs each day. a friend of mine her daughter wasnt talking much either, & her doctor said hire someone & within 5 months her speech was amazing... taking some time, attention & work.. i come home from work & work with my daughter, read books, & play games that would help her speech or other learning things

  10. children talk at different at different rates and at his age there just isnt that much concern on childrens speach unless there are other behaviors that bring up questions, but I have a site here that should make you feel better and unless the staff is a certified speech therapist she is overstepping her bounds.
