  1. The 1943 Wheat penny is unusual due to the fact that copper was needed for the 2nd world war. These pennies are grey in color because they are made of steel, hence referred to as the steel penny. Many make the mistake of presuming they are silver. They are not silver. Unfortunately they made a lot of steel pennies & due to the nature of steel many of them rust & degrade due to improper handling.

    Normally Wheat cents run at a minimum of 2 cents a piece how ever many dealers pay a minimum of 4 or even 5 cents a piece on up depending on condition. For more information please see your local coin dealer.
