1950 Sea King / Montgomery Ward 5hp stuck in forward?

Question

i've taken it apart but can't find anything wrong? Runs fine but can't get it into neutral? Any ideas?

Is the gear shift handle properly installed?

Sometimes they shift while moving.

hi there.... check the lenght  of the shifter  rod..... If you removed the lower unit to replace the impellor  you may find it has moeved or been accidentally turned....  If it wont go into neutral check by disconnecting the shifter arm and try pushing the rod down it may move own lower than the shifter arm will allow...  so adjust it by carefully turning it so that it becomes longer... ( be extremely careful becasue if it comes out you will have to problems getting it back in..

If thats not the case then yor lower unit clutch dog may be broken.
