I am trying to locate a manual for a 283 engine in a 1963 C-10 and have tried Haynes manuals, but the earliest I can find on there website is 1967. Please, can anyone point me in the right direction. I just bought the truck for $500, engine runs, but I wanna replace/ update a few things and have never worked on this engine before.

  1. the 67 and the 63 are identical. Nice little straight 6 engine.

  2. Go to LMC Truck web site. They have repro GM manuals for that year. The 283 V-8 was a great engine. Like any in the small block category,( 265-283-307-327-305-350...) except for bore and stroke, they are basically the same. Easy to work on. Parts readily available.

  3. 283 motor was first introduced in 1957 and made all the way up into 1967 or 68 but yeah very easy to work on yours has a road draft tube instead for crankcase ventilation and the oil filler is at the front of the block easy to put oil in they quit this filler design in 1967 i believe anyways all public library's have Chilton's or haynes manuals for you to use or go to any swap meet and there's plenty used ones to be had very common easy to work on and parts will interchange from 1955 to about 1986 when they went to a new valve cover and head design for the small block and the crank went to a one piece seal on mains.265-283-302-307-327-350-400 all are the same externally and all share water pumps, distributors, oil pans, valve covers, fans, camshafts, push rods, valves, heads, intakes etc. Any small or big block will drop into this truck with no difficulties as the motor mounts are also the same... Never can understand why so many people collect chevys is it because they kept it "simple" and everything interchanges...???
