What is the correct radiator shroud for an L-46 corvette? Some say it is a 3956109, but is that true for early production cars as well.

  1. they are all available from corvette mikes and other corvette parts guys . the shroud should be the same for all the years of that body type --from 68 on

  2. L-46s were originally produced with 2 different cooling systems.

    System 1:

Aluminum GM #3155316 radiator; external aluminum supply tank, steel, cylindrical fan shroud with steel lower baffle plate. This shroud, GM #3938943, is long-since discontinued and is not reproduced, as far as I know.

    System 2:

Brass/copper radiator GM #3018803; no external supply tank, radiator shroud is plastic with graphite and fiber reinforcements. This shroud is GM #3956109 and is still available and in reproduction.

So basically if your car has the brass radiator without an external tank, you should need the #3956109 plastic shroud, which was the most common.  If your car had the aluminum rad./steel shroud you will have a search ahead of you as the plastic shroud will not interchange with cars originally equipped with the steel version.
