  1. To start thinking in terms of developing an energy policy to make the US less dependent on oil from the Middle East and in developing alternative sources of energy.

Jimmy Carter was the first president to fully develop such a policy but unfortunately Ronald Reagan came after him and pretty much undid, or didn't follow through, Carter's plan just to please his corporate buddies.

The Republicans have since then either vetoed or blocked in Congress any reasonable demands for the oil and car industries to do their part in helping the US become less reliable on oil.

  2. Here's what I remember:

Higher gas prices. I can remember when gas used to cost less than a quarter a gallon. After the embargo, it cost more than twice as much and the prices never went back down

More oil imports from the Middle East, which resulted in a greater dependency on imported oil that lasts to this day

A move to build smaller, more fuel efficient cars. That was largely done by making cars weigh less. That meant removing glass and heavier metals and replacing them with less crash-resistant aluminum and plastic wherever possible. I can recall when car dashboards were made of metal and the shields over the control displays were glass instead of the plastic of today

  3. I still remember the long lines, lost many a productive hour waiting in them to buy gas.
