  1. Yes it could be just a clutch cable, but it also could be a clutch pedal that has broken.  I've had that happen.  You need to remove the clutch pedal to take out the clutch cable anyway so you can take a look at the pedal when you get it out.  Grease the cable when your putting it into the housing.

  2. This is the clutch cable. Put the car on ramps and block the front wheels and set the brake. Crawl under the drivers side of the trans, and run your hand over the axle to find the clutch rod. See if you still have the end piece as it holds the butterfly nut that attaches the cable-so if it is missing, you will need one. If you find the broken cable to be badly unwound, you will need to cut it clean so it will slide out of the tension tube-remove the tube. Now pull the carpet back around the tunnel where the pedal cluster is bolted to. Remove the 2 bolts and out comes the arm with (any luck) the clutch cable. Unhook it and draw it out of the tunnel. There should be a guide tube just out of sight (they like to break loose and flop around a lot and give you a soft clutch-But thats another repair. Now feed your new cable down the guide and hook it on the pedal arm, Next wire tie it to the hook. Have some one under the trans gently pull the clutch cable when you feed it into the tunnel and bolt the pedal. Have them pull on it and watch the clutch leap off the floor and "assume the position". Block the pedal up. Now feed the other end of the cable thru the metal ring mount-and slide the tension tube over the cable so it has an arch in it and engage the clutch rod with the threaded end and spin the butterfly nut on your done.

  3. Yes. It could also be a bit more if you are unlucky. Put your hand on the tunnel behind the E brake and try pushing the clutch in and out. If you can feel something clicking/popping with your hand you will need to find VW specialist to fix properly.
