1977 85 HP Johnson Javelin slips or spins out when giving it power.?

As we were coming across the lake at full throttle all of a sudden the engine rapped up a bit faster like it was spinning out. I thought that I lost the prop as there was no clunk or grinding sounds. I checked and the prop was good. started the engine back up and then eased out and the transmission engaged fine up till about 5MPH and then it was like it just spun out again. Idled back to dock and loaded boat. put the boat into gear and turned the prop by hand and it rolled the engine over both in forward and reverse gears. as we were coming back could not hear any grinding sounds or any indication of stripped gears.

ANY SUGGESTIONS would make me and my family happy...

  1. What has happened is the rubber hub in your prop has broken loose and now when you put it in gear under load the

inside is turning but not the outside. You can take it to a repair shop and they can install a new hub and it will work just like new.I know it is an extra expense, but have you thought of getting another prop in case of an emergency. It really is a good investment and will also give you piece of mind in knowing you won't be stuck on the lake if you have a prop problem.Hope this helps and think about buying a spare.

    Happy boating.

  2. Sounds like the rubber bushing in the prop hub broke loose of the prop.   You need to buy a new prop or have your old one rebuilt by a reputable prop repair shop.

  3. take the prop to a prop shop and have it rehubbed.

that rubber bushing can look & feel in there solid, until you try to push a boat with it.

shouldn't be too expensive.  they'll polish it up & balance it and smooth out all those dings -- it'll be better than before.
