s/n 5416341 I'm having a VERY difficult time removing the flywheel in order to gain access to change out the trigger mechanism. I am usint a harmonic balancer puller and she is dag on tighter than i dont know what...I have read about a special tool that is used specifically on the merc outboards, I dont pull flywheels on mercs too often so I cant justify buying one as these arent cheap. My new trigger is on the way and I'd like to have it tore apart as to when it arrives I can put er back together....ive already used pb blaster and heat along with a brass hammer to try and persuade it off with no luck...Any ideas? - Bob

  1. Just gotta keep working at it. Sounds like you're on the right track. Tighten the puller down tap the puller with a hammer, tighten a little more, tap with hammer and just keep at it.

If you can get a pry bar under the flywheel without tearing anything up, have a buddy hold preasure with a pry bar when you tap with the hammer.

  2. The special tool is the thing. If in salt particularly. Your way will work with patients. The ST screws into the hub like a motorcycle tool. Then the big pusher goes down the middle. See if you can't put a deposit down and borrow one- or just take it to them and pay the 1/2 hour minimum. Money well spent to keep the buggar from eating it's way thru your motor cover at 5000rpm.

  3. You only need to get it to move a little.  The Puller your using should work, I've used them before, just be sure your even on all three screws.  I know your soaking it in penitrating oil.  try Putting (wedging) something under the flywheel. Pick a spot that won't damage anything.  Then pun an old nut on the crank to protect the threads. s***w it down but stop before the crank thread could be damaged, because I want you to hit the puller s***w really hard!  Then tighten it and hit it again.   Might work!   The only other trick is to cool the crank shaft with ice or CO2, not the flywheel.  Use a bigger hammer!!!!  BOL
