1980 Kawasaki LTD 440 carb problem?

I have the motorcycle mentioned above. It runs ok, but the problem is whenever I stop after having ridden for a little while it is idleing WAY too fast. It idles fine after I let it warm up when I start it. But afterwards it's just way too fast.

Is this a carb problem? Or is it something else? Any ideas on how to fix this problem? I just bought this thing a week ago and don't know much about it.

  1. open the choke...

turn down the idle s***w after it warms up to get your idle where you want it, then remember to close the choke to warm it up...

  2. the idle s***w is on the bottom side, set it while warm and use the choke to start it

  3. speaking from experience, get rid of it. the next thing that will go wrong it will start running rough and when you take it to kaw dealer they will explain that the cam on the end of the crank for the ing is egg shaped and it will cost you approx $1,600 minium to repair. I bought one brand new and I ended up telling the dealer what they could do with it. After going to court they had to refund all of my money

  4. Magz is right. You need to adjust the carb to idle at full warm up and the choke to start it and run it until it warms up.

  5. It wold be swell if the carbs were the problem. Turn a couple screws and sail away. I'm never lucky enough to get out of things that easily. First talk to a trusted friend/mechanic. Failing that go to the dealer, if you know a dealer. I will not trust a dealer simply because there is a neon sign outside. Get a couple recommendations first. Beware the dealer with 3 or more brands claiming to be expert in all of them and with a comprehensive parts stock in all of the them. Yeah, right ! The only dealer I have ever heard of, expert in multiple brands of toys lives with elves at the north pole.
