  1. Both were great, but I still get chill bumps every time I watch the video of the USA defeating the Soviets. It was a bunch of amateurs vs the Russian pros. Phelps was expected to win. The USA stunned everyone in 1980. I think it is the greatest sports moment in US sports history.

  2. Both I and the U.S. answer:  Michael Phelps

(*doesn't seem that a high percentage of Americans give a care about hockey....)

  3. 1980: miracle on ice. a bunch of kids barely out of college that werent really respected won against a hockey powerhouse. it was more than a hockey game though. The United States and Democracy overpowered the Soviet Union and communism. Micheal Phelps' medals are more of a story of individual drive and accomlishment.

  4. If you are a true sports fan, you would care about and appreciate both accomplishments.

They are both different... the 1980 USA hockey team was the story of the ultimate underdog triumphing against all odds, while Michael Phelps is just an amazing physical specimen who, fortunately, has maximized his gifts with hard work to achieve amazing things.

    Both are worthy of praise.

  5. What Phelps did was nice, and amazing.  But if 1980 Captain Mike Eruzione was standing in front of him, he'd bow down and say, "I'm not worthy."

  6. The hockey option, of course!  I think the 1980 gold medal team matters more because it was during a time of tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, and that amazing win really boosted America's spirits, whereas Phelps' gold medals are just another record to break.

  7. The Miracle on Ice . They were not supposed to be anything great those guys. Just a bunch of college kids going against the powerhouses . They truly became a team and that is why they won. That is also why over 20 years later people still talk about them. Phelps was expected to do well

  8. There both sick for our country...go USA!

  9. They're both very significant olympic events, but different. 1980 was a huge upset, Phelps is simply the greatest swimmer ever, he's been expected to do something like this for a while.

  10. They both had a different meaning to the U.S. and different times. In 1980 it was a big deal, but its not as big of a deal as Phelps is right now to the U.S.

I care about both, They both were great events!

  11. Well I wasnt alive for the 1980 hockey so for me it would have to be Michael Phelps....

If there is one sport that America cares less about than hockey it is swimming so I still think the 1980 hockey team meant more to America.  The fact that it is still referenced regularly by the general population says a lot.  Maybe in 10 years the phrase "Phelpsian greatness" will be a mainstay in society and I can eat my words....

I guess its too soon to tell but I think the hockey team still is the most meaningful for americans

  12. USA Hockey Gold Medal. A bunch of no-name amatuers against the best in international hockey, at the time. What Phelps did was great, but I'm not into swimming as a competitive sport, but rather exercise.  Plus, with NBC's huge tape delay, you knew what happened before they showed it, so it was anti-climatic. Didn't have the internet in 1980, so there were less spoilers around.

  13. I appreciate the 1980 USA Hockey team gold medal but i wasnt even born yet so thats all i can do is appreciate it

as for Michael Phelps winning 8 gold in one Olympic i think that is pretty amazing as a past swimmer myself ( in HS/ MS) I was really into it

If i was born and old enough to remember the 1980 team I am sure i would have been just as excited as i was the other night

Can you blame anyone who was excited i mean his seventh gold was won by .01 of a second pretty magical if you ask me

  14. i would say the 1980 would matters the most because it had probably changed united states hockey forever just like the summit series for Canada. I believe it is also a uplift for the US economy as you can see in the begining of the movie miracle on ice. But thats luck no way will college boys beat such a powerful team. I would like to see them beat them again with actually soviet borned players no will they way beat them again.
