Question:

1981 Honda Twinstar CM200T - shift problems?

I just fixed up this bike to make it drive-worthy. But I can only shift it between 1st and neutral. Would the shift forks be misplaced? No Idea. Also, I cleaned up the carb and jets really well....but it still sounds like it's running like c**p. It'll be idling, and go from reving up realing loud, to almost stalling out, to reving up again. If I turn the throttle, it might rev up for a second, but then it just dies down to nothing (i can only get it in first gear and it won't go over 5mph).....

Any tips? Think I need to pull the whole tranny apart for the shift problems? And could it be the valves for the running problem (it was sitting for many years)

  1. Did you clean out the gas tank really well when you did the carbs?  It still sounds like a carbs issue to me, perhaps a stuck choke valve or a hole in your slide diaphragms.  A common mistake I see on bikes which owners do their own carb cleans is folded or pinched diaphragms so the slides don't function properly.  The tranny issue sounds like bent shift forks.  Does the tranny clunk or grind when you try to shift?

  2. The shift lever is either bent in toward the engine case and needs to be bent back out as to allow full movement of the shift lever or possible shift cam lobe in behind the clutch is loose or improperly adjusted.Worst case forks may be bent and burned. On the carbs the idle air screws may need to be turned in a little to allow the engine to accellerate properly.Pull valve covers to determine if valve(s) are sticking .If the engine sat for a long time the rings may be stuck to the ring lands cutting down on compression explanning the stall at low rpm.Good luck on your project.
