1982 Yamaha xt200j 6 volt electrical system.?

Question

Just picked up an 82 Yamaha xt200j. Getting right to the point here, I installed a fresh new battery and want to make sure there is no draw on it as it sits. How can I test this . With a voltage meter or, a circuit tester between the negative cable and ground..? Not really sure on this one. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have the service manual but I didn't see this covered in any of the test procedures. One other note. this baby starts on one kick with or without the battery in it..

disconnect one of the battery cables ,use an amp meter or a test light connect one end to the battery and one end to the cable, no reading  or no light = no draw
