  1. 3 yellow wires coming out of nearly all stators of road bikes, a few are white. Label them A B C and unhook them. at 2500 RPM you need 60 volts AC from any and all combination of 2 wires, IE a-c a-b b-c a-b. no voltmeter? use a 110 volt light bulb. should be good and bright at 3000 rpm across all 3 if this is correct your problem is rectifier or regulator, commonly one unit on newer bikes 2 units on older bikes. If you dont have Ac on those wires, you need to check your stator, feild windings, brushes, etc. BE warned your bike is a known "problem child" for bad stators, DO NOT REPLACE WITH USED. Fix it with NEW Parts only.

  2. The rotor is the most common problem.

    Then the brushes.

If the L crankcase cover is damaged (due to a fall) the brushes will be mis-aligned and mess everything up - the cover will have to be replaced if there are any signs of damage (ware marks, scratches).

  3. Check and Clean ALL Electrical connections. Then charge the battery and use a volt meter to check the voltage at 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm. If it is 12v or Under You have Stator or RR problems. I'm not totally familiar with Hondas but most early UJM's (Universal Japanise Motorcycle) share common traits.

  4. The 80s bikes have this thing call a "stator" that tend to burnt out.  It is located on the left side of the engine cover next to the front drive sprocket.  You'll have to either get another one or have yours rebuilt by a local electrical shop.
